NOMAD

Estimated Release Date: Q1 2026

THE JOURNEY

100 years ago, American Explorer Roy Chapman Andrews began exploratory efforts in the Gobi Desert - a largely uncharted territory - and led to discoveries that would change our understanding of the natural world. Through harsh terrain, political instability, and impossible logistical hurdles, his teams collected thousands of samples, marking a golden era for paleontology in the region.

In 1930, the campaign came to an abrupt close as Andrews ventured North into dangerous, politically contested regions and was forced to end the fruitful explorations of the Gobi Desert. Andrews’ efforts paved the way for a new era of science and greater understanding of our planet, the human race, and proved once again that grit and determination are the backbone of science and discovery. It is believed that Andrews himself inspired the character Indiana Jones - from his wide-brimmed hat to a revolver on his hip, a background in scientific academia, and an uncanny knack for storytelling - it’s easy to see the connection.

A century since Andrews began exploring the region, a group of 30 explorers and scientists mounted on camels to complete his journey through the northern regions. RCA Society Board member Bob Atwater led the RC Andrews Legacy Camel Expedition, and on his and 15 explorers’ wrists was the Nomad. This dual-time, compass-equipped sports watch was designed specifically for this journey, and now that the journey has ended, valuable feedback has been relayed back to us to craft the perfect watch made for exploration.

THE FEEDBACK

“I kept an intermittent account on how the watches performed at our various scientific research sites and during our off-road extreme travel conditions to our various base camps where we operated from. Our watches were used throughout the two weeks we lived in the Gobi Desert. They performed amazingly well under extreme heat temperatures that reached as high as 124 degrees Fahrenheit, during several very strong rain storms, three strong wind/sand storms along with other unexpected conditions. All of the watches performed magnificently and were the highlight souvenir for all 15 of us who had the honor of wearing and testing them. On behalf of my expedition leaders, we personally give the watch our highest field tested rating.

-Bob Atwater, Expedition Leader

THE PRODUCTION-SPEC NOMAD

Using direct feedback provided by the RC Andrews Legacy Camel Expedition explorers themselves, the following changes will be implemented on the production-spec Nomad:

• A bi-directional bezel to enhance usability in navigation and timing tasks
• Update dial design with more prominent markers at the cardinal positions
• Improve overall legibility with thicker black outlines around indices
• Apply lume more generously for improved visibility in low-light conditions and change to blue-color lume
• Retain the compass bezel but distinguish the North indicator with a triangle marker and a different color to clearly differentiate it from other directional points
• A date function at the four o’clock position
• Instead of metal bracelet, include on rubber single-pass strap
• Two dial color options: a) Original tan Expedition / Field-Tested colorway, and b) a Hi-Vis orange colorway for optimal legibility

To round out the package, the caseback will adorn the Roy Chapman Andrews Legacy Expedition graphic, with “Official Timekeeper” and “Field Tested” text to show its pedigree. Each caseback will be individually numbered.

SERIES II

OBSCURA

Estimated Release Date: Q1 2026

THE STORY

Designed with Beers and Cameras for analog photographers and built to thrive both in the field and on the wrist, the Obscura is a fusion of horology and photographic utility. Whether you're capturing fleeting moments on film or kicking back at a beachside café, the Obscura is built to be your everyday companion.

This collaboration marks the first timepiece to integrate an exposure gauge complication based on the Sunny 16 Rule, a clever and time-tested method for determining proper exposure without the need for a light meter. Developed from a patented innovation by Beers And Cameras founder Juan Martinez, the Obscura distills this essential photographic principle into an intuitive, wrist-worn tool.

The concept behind the Obscura was first conceived over five years ago and officially patented in June 2024 (Patent No. 12,007,722). Nodus is proud to be the first brand to bring this complication to market, marking an exciting moment in the intersection of horology and photography.

SERIES II CHANGES

The first batch of Obscuras was intentionally limited to 100 pieces and served as a measured way to introduce a novel product and assess how the market would respond before scaling further. Because the initial run was received well and sold out quickly, we are now proud to introduce the Obscura Series II. Building on feedback received by existing and prospective customers, the changes are subtle but impactful:

• Removal of the Beers and Camera logo on the dial for a cleaner aesthetic
• A smoother, easier to rotate, and more consistent bezel action
• Upgraded dial finish from matte black to a dark fumé dial that mimics film grain, with a floating indices effect achieved by a layer of thick clear enamel

  • CASE
    316L surgical-grade stainless steel
    38mm case width x 40mm bezel width X 11.7mm thickness x 47mm lug-to-lug x 20mm lug width

EXPOSURE GAUGE COMPLICATION

For film photographers, exposure is everything. Many classic cameras lack built-in light meters or automatic exposure modes, requiring users to rely on experience, handheld meters, or mental calculations. The Obscura simplifies this process by expanding on the Sunny 16 Rule via an analogue, mechanical complication, providing quick exposure guidance at a glance.

The “Sunny 16 Rule” is a straightforward way to gauge daylight exposure using incident light rather than reflected readings. This rule states that on a bright, sunny day, an ISO 100 film shot at f/16 requires a shutter speed of 1/125s. The Obscura adapts this principle, offering settings for various other apertures, ISO’s and lighting conditions of sunny day and overcast cloudy skies. While night photographers already know they’ll be working with slow shutter speeds, daylight shooters will find the Exposure Gauge on the Obscura an indispensable reference.

How to use the Exposure Gauge:

  1. Turn the bezel indicator clockwise to match your lens aperture with the corresponding value on the chapter ring.

  2. Then, find the correct ISO marker on the dial-ring based on your film speed:
    ISO 100 or +1 (ISO 200)
    ISO 400 or +1 (ISO 800)

  3. The ISO marker points to the corresponding shutter speed.

  4. Based on lighting conditions (sunny or cloudy with minimal shadows), use the shutter speed indicated on the bezel to properly set your camera and make your image.
